The slightly cheaper one looks to be all plastic whereas the relatively expensive one has a bit of metal on top.

Personally, I would get the cheapest. The only parts which matter are the plug, socket and connecting cable. If plastic doesn't fit then it is easier to modify than metal.

First one I bought was a cheap Fenvi brand caddy (looks like your 2nd link). It had no threads for the mounting bracket screws so I couldn't use it. I got a newmodeus caddy later on and although it was more expensive, it is very high quality. No problems at all with it. Recently I bought another caddy here in the EU which is all plastic but still decent quality with brass inserts for the screw mounting points. I recommend it and it's not that expensive. It also has an activity indicator LED wired to the front which is a nice addition. Not sure if it's sold outside of Europe though.

The reason I ask is I've bought some for my thinkpads and if it's a little bit off it will fit slanted a bit and can be tough to eject in the hotswap ultrabay. I may just use it as a spacer and weight saver as my msata and 1tb will be ok for now and all my stuff is in iso format so I really don't need the DVD drive at all.

Some years ago I owned a T420s and bought a genuine Lenovo HDD media bay adaptor from Singapore. It was a reasonable price because it was the previous generation and said SATA 1 on the label. I correctly assumed that dumb wiring would run at whatever speed was offered by the socket in the media bay.
