It's an Intel OEM processor, not 'generally available' through retail channels.

If that doesn't work out, try Ebay.

ebay usually has one or two available at full tray prices, say around $200 and up.

What about a P8400 instead? They're much easier to find.

The only difference between the T6600 and T6670 is that the latter supports Intel's Virtualization Technology (VT). All P8xxx and P/T9xxx models support VT also. Just a thought.

I am absolutely sure that the 6670 will fit/function in my machine (HP G70) while I am not sure about the 8xxx/9xxx chips.

All I'm looking for is to add VT to my machine. The clock speed of the current cpu (T4200) is fine. Even with 2 VMs running on top of Win7 the CPU rarely goes past 80%. A T6670 will get me Intel VT/x as well as another 200 Mz (whhooppee) of cpu clock.

My G70 was available with a T6670 on the same mobo/bios that I have now. Unfortunately, the G70 also uses that thrice-damned inscrutable uneditable Insyde BIOS so you never know what will work.

Do you know whether your G70 has the Intel GL40 or GM45 chipset? If you have a Pentium Dual-Core processor, the GL40 is most likely.

I hadn't thought about it until now, but the GL40 may not be compatible with the P7000-9000 or T9x00-series processors. It can support FSB speed of 667-800MHz, but all of those have a Front Side Bus speed of 1066MHz. That would mean the T6670 is one of the few Penryn processors that supports VT and will work with the GL40 chipset.....

I could be wrong, but I'd never thought about that potential limitation before. I thought all Socket-P processors were interchangeable....but now I'm not so sure...

I found it thru PROVANTAGE, a legitimate supplier based in Ohio, but the price is painful- $212! Here's the link- LINK

CPUZ 1.52.2 tells me that the chipset is a GM45/GM47 running at an 800Mz FSB.

It's not so much the chipset and socket, it's the Insyde BIOS support for 8000/9000 series CPUs.

as I have said, I have no idea if the mobo bios will support anything 'better' than a T6670.

But if you have a T9300 you'd be willing to loan me on approval, I'd be happy to try it out. Would rather have a T8100/T8300 though.

    Make that a T8100/8300, not P8100/8300
