I want to build my ultimate XP/Vista era 32bit gaming laptop because my life is boring.
And I either want the GTX 280M which I know pops up from time to time on eBay or AliExpress.

But I know the HD 4850 is faster in many tasks however for the life of me I cannot find this card with a MXM 2.1 connector, I used to see these things commonly back in the day but now I just cannot find a single one for the life of me, there thousands of them with MXM 3.0 though.

Anyone know a reliable place I can find one with MXM 2.1 connector? The FirePro M7740 one is fine too since its basically just the Mobility Radeon HD 4860.

If you do find one let me know so I can tell you mods. On one I have I raised the core from 540 to 640 without adding any voltage.

Basically they need a lot of caps added. Additionally the VRM does not have any load line correction, so soldering wires between the core and power phases greatly increases the voltage by improving efficiency.

Very, very hard to find this card. I believe only a couple MSI laptops from circa 2009 had them in 2.1 form, the rest of the industry had already moved on to 3.0. There wasn’t a unified VBIOS either, they were still running a master/slave vBIOS specific configuration, it may be hard to find the master one.

Taobao is pretty garbage for old parts, AliExpress is a lot better for this but I keep a watch on both sites so far only 4650 pops up on AliExpress with MXM 2.1

ASUS made a 4870 for mxm 2. It does have the power tab though, which may or may not need power on it. I think the card was for the W90. Beware that I believe the card did run for a Clevo user, but the temp sensor could not be read resulting in 1 minute shutdowns.

The 4000 series era was a fun time for GPUs. Graphics had a modern look while hardware was very responsive to mods.

Thanks for the tip I heard about it but thought it was one of those phantom cards like that 6990M on MXM 2.1 that was made in super low numbers

Hi, there were 3 cards made which fit what you are looking for: MSI 4850m 512MB, mentioned Asus black PCB with power tab 4870m 1GB and 4870m 1GB made for Alienware m17. Now I will tell you how lucky you are ;). Because I know someone who actually have brand new Alienware 4870m slave cards, still in the anti static bags, waiting for someone like you to make use of them. That' s not end to your luck because this someone is...me :D.

This is my test card hence it current state. I do have however somewhere in my closet abyss probably three brand new cards. I bought them few years back with the intention to do some cool project with them but it newer materialize, ...yet . Those are slave cards and if I recall they need to be flash with master vbios, which I have somewhere too, to make them work. PM me and we can talk there.
I would love to see one of those in a classic gaming machine again, play some games back from the times.
