I'm looking at buying a cheap hp 550 which has a gle960 mobo. I'm just wondering what the max fsb supported by this chipset is?
    thanks

Well, you wouldn't want to be overclocking an hp. They have enough heating problems! :p the max FSB goes up to 1600mhz on desktops and 1066 on laptops. This will be the maximum since the new i7 processors is the next gen.

The GLE960 chipset only supports 533Mhz FSB Intel Celeron Processors

In terms of upgrading the CPU ?

If its anything like the GL960, then it should be 800MHz FSB. I haven't really seen any users here with embedded computing chipsets.

Try comparing the GL960 and the GLE960, or just take a risk and if the higher FSB is not supported, somehow RMA it.

Officially the 960 (honestly, there is probably little to no difference between GLE or GL) only supports 533MHz FSB Celerons. However, many manufacturers ship them with Pentium Dual Cores, and many users have successfully upgraded them to 667MHz AND 800MHz FSB Merom AND Penryn chips. For the most part, getting a PDC to work is almost a guarantee and getting a T5xxx, T7xxx, or T8xxx to work is still a very good chance.

i didnt say anything about overclocking. i was just wondering if there was any point buying it and upgrading to a core 2 duo cpu... but it seems there isn't if it only supports a 533mhz fsb.... cos it would just downclock too much...

does anyone else have any idea?

Aah....Thanks for the link to the datasheet Thomas. Saved me the trouble of going to Intel's bloated site. :D

@jisaac: The datasheet does state that all features supported by the GM965 and the GL960 are supported by the GME965 and the GLE960. The only thing that seems to be added is Analog TV-Out. :p

So, in terms of upgrading the GL E960 should support a FSB of upto 800MHz, memory frequency of upto 667MHz, and max memory of 3GB, as the GL960 did. (But I cannot guarantee it :p)

In terms of upgrading, I think Penryns will be out of reach considering that the HP550 is still new (?) and may not have a BIOS update to support the Penryns.

EDIT: I just checked. BIOS is still at F.00 :p

If you check the Datasheet (section 1.3), you will see that at 1.3.1 it states the Max FSB to be 533Mhz, 1.3.2 states that only 2Gb of 533Mhz RAM is supported.

Oh yes. But Intel is retarded. And Lazy. They haven't updated the datasheet since 2007. I know there is a Toshiba user with the GL960 who reported a successful upgrade to the X9000

I cannot guarantee anything. The BIOS is still at the release version.

If you checkout the sticky in the Acer forum, people are happily running a T9500+3GB RAM.

Theoretically, all Meroms should be supported. Because, the GME965 and the GLE960 versions use the same BIOS. And merom Core 2 Duos are supported. So, anything upto the T7800 should be supported.

    EDIT: What facts ? [IMG]

Analog TV-Out is the only addition.

thanks andy... i guess i'd have to go for the t7800 if i did get this laptop for christmas unless someone else can confirm penryns are supported

No Problem. I hope you read "theoretically" :D....

Anyway, good luck with the probable purchase and upgrade.

another thing... the website i was planning to buy from states that up to 4gb of ram is supported however the datasheet for the chipset states:
What is with this contradiction?? Is 2gb or 4gb supported? i mean if the datasheet is wrong.. it may just confirm that fsb speeds other than 533mhz are supported

I think the dealer was confused when copying down the specs from HP. It has to be 2GB max (officially).

    Even Crucial says so.

Why don't you check out the Aspire 5315 ? Its almost near 300 quid, and is guaranteed to support anything upto the T9500.
