One of the laptops I'm considering purchasing does not have an internal ODD. If I purchase this computer, it will be my first time with no ODD (yes, I'm a no-ODD virgin). Folks are telling me I'll be fine without an internal ODD because of the availability of digital downloads. But I'd like to have a portable ODD. What's the best kind? Probably looking for a DVD+-RW/CD-RW combo, but what kind of write speed and other specs should I be paying attention to? I generally do not do a lot of burning, and would primarily use this drive for reads.

Any, if you go into any of your local computer shops, they should have some good branded ones, but stay away from the crap you find on eBay.
