Well what is it, say what your processor is and any over/underclocking you have done. This is just a reference for comparison.

it depends....when i have not been doing much, my pentium 4 (no oc) idles at 37ish degrees. however if i idle after playing a game or burning lots of cds or video encoding, it idles in around 45-55 until i shut it down.

what numbers should I be looking at ? there is frequency, 4 temperatures, discharge rate and HDD! The 4 temperatures are at 45-50 degrees - no under/overclocking! but the computer is not really idling, im on the net, hearing music and watching pictures, dunno if it makes a difference.. later I'll check what the temperature is when I'm playing battlefield 2 because it gets pretty hot!

Turion ML-30 underclocked idle 45C max temp 58C. Underclock settings 4x 0.925 volts and 8X 1.125 volts. Can't recall idle temp before underclocking but I used to get 68C with load.

Big-M, I think those are fine.

My temperatures - I have a Pacific Breeze cooling pad and have undervolted my CPU:
    37* CPU
    42-44* HDD

    Without the pad:
    46-48* CPU
    48-53* HDD

Yes. My notebook is really thin in the front, and that's where the hard drive sits - considering that it is 7200RPM and in a tight space, it gets pretty warm.
The CPU sits in the back where it is thicker, and runs cooler. Undervolting helps.

That or my skin is thin. I am sensitive to heat.

I don't know how others feel about the temperature of the D620 on their lap. I don't like it, the DV1000, my wife's Latitude, our old Compaq, my wife's gateway, or the 6000 on my lap. They are too hot for me.

I don't know what to tell you. It's a Core Duo and at idle speeds it operates at a lower clock speed. I have the fans cranked up to provide maximum cooling and I ensure that the vents aren't blocked. 25C is actually on the high side, I observed sustained temps of 16C last night. They shot up to about 21C after playing some MP3s and web browsing. Like I've stated, my temp readings could be way off, but short of cracking the case and shooting it with a thermal laser device... I'll just have to rely on the app.

It depends on how many fans are on constantly. If I put a good cooling pad under my ZV6000 with undervolted Athlon 3500+ and a constantly spinning fan, I will also get around 20-25. I've never seen this Dell e1705 but it may have a fan or two spinning nonstop.

As I said you can't get below ambient temperature. If your room temp is 16c then the best you could theorectically achieve is 16c with fan cooling but thats not practical because cpu/gpu and other components produce heat and you're only using this air (16c) to blow away the heat from components. It doesn't matter even if you have 2x 100cfm fans. I haven't even mentioned the confined space and the very little air cooling compared to desktops.

If its reporting below your ambient temp then there is something wrong with your sensor or its reporting it lower than what it should be.

Using a cooling pad I'm sure pretty good temps are achieveable but thats additional cooling and it will not get below ambient.

I'm an owner of a E1705 with a T2500. With fans on high, my CPU will idle at 21C, which is lower then my ambient temperature of 76F.

    21C is about 69F.

I think 100c is the maximum possible before shutdown, and the other two are the temp for each core.
