I bought a new MTRON PATA ZIF SSD (32GB), but my D420 did not recognize the drive. I tried twice an then put my original Toshiba back and the latop worked fine. Rocket Disk suggested to flip the cable in order to try to fix the issue. That did not work either. But the problem now is D420 is not detecting even the original Toshiba 1.8". Have I fried the laptop?

Not sure what you flipped exactly.. The whole drive? Or a connector between the motherboard and the PATA drive?

Usually these things won't even plug in when they're upside down. I know for a fact that PATA has a blank pin specifically for this purpose.

well, I flipped the cable going into the ZIF socket.

You are right that you cannot flip normal IDE/SATA connectors (like almost all other connectors in a motherboard). But ZIF PATA can be flipped. Since the connectors are on one side of the plastic base, I would think flipping should not normally make a connection. But I am not too experienced with ZIF PATA connectors.
