Yeah. I use 3 different screen resolutions on 3 different computers (1920 x 1200, 1280 x 768, and I forgot the other one). What's yours? I'll tell you why I brought this up later. Both Desktop and Laptop also.

    That was quick...

Ok, I'll tell you why. I'm building a website and I wanted to know whether I should use 1024 or 800 (width) as standard for my site. No one likes scrolling sideways of course (if you do, you must be nuts.) I think 800 x 600 is getting obsolete in terms of general use such as web browsing. Should I still accommodate those using 800 x 600? I need to go with the majority

Would you like a poll added to this? I'm also going to take the liberty of moving this thread to the Hardware forum since it is actually a relevant topic. :)

Well, the majority of users will not be using 800x600 anymore (the ones that do probably aren't going to be up-to-date enough to find and explore your website as well...usually the group of users who are still using 800x600 are 'behind the times' by quite a lot). I'd say go with 900-1000px width, that's a good size.

Anyways, I'm using 1280x800 on my MacBook.

thanks for moving it to the right spot. Yeah a poll would be nice. the choices are obvious and straight-forward, no need for me to explain it. Though *some* people might lie. Eh add it nonetheless.

I tested a 1024 width banner on a 1024 screen res. There was a horizontal scroll. To get it perfect, I used 1000px.

    1280x1024 on my desktop.

Don't make the horizontal banner the same width as the screen width [in pixels] because the vertical scrollbar takes up a few pixels of width, so the banner will definitely require horizontal scrolling.

Poll is up, multiple choice. If your res isn't part of the poll it's probably one of the more obscure ones, so please vote "other" and post it up.

My Desktop has a 19" widescreen at 1400*900, my laptop has a 15" standard aspect screen at 1024*768.

    WXGA = 1280x768 / 1280x800?

I haven't seen any with 1280x720 resolution except on a few "older" LCD TV's.

Some use 1024 x 768 to make it easy to read. I guess it's safe to assume that no one uses *cough* 800 x 600 *cough*. Anyone who is technologically inclined uses 800 x 600?

I use 800x600 when playing flash games to make them larger :) But i use 1280x800 standard on laptop and 1920 x 1200 on desktop , but i must say that you should code your layout to be 800 wide and make it extendable , the only case where that wouldnt work is if you were creating a layout sliced from photoshop or fireworks and thats really unprofessional so i wouldnt suggest you did that. Banners dont need to be any wider than 600 pixels really.

I was playing around with my display settings changing the screen resolutions around just to see how my layout would look. A couple seconds later, Vista crashes, well not literally, it just says Windows Explorer has stopped working then Windows Explorer is restarting and it happens again a couple minutes later. Shame on Vista lol. Windows Explorer never crashed on me on XP though. I wonder what made Vista so special.

    1920*1200 on my nw8440.

The text can be hard to read at times, and my parents get concerned that I strain my eyes too much with that resolution, but so far, so good. I especially like how you can have 2 windows open side-by-side and not have to scroll either of them horizontally.

I didn't realize you could select multiple options, though. My ancient Dell 1500FP (first dell LCD) has a native resolution of 1024*768. If I get an HP L2045w LCD for Christmas, it will be 1680*1050.

I run 1680 x 1050 on my my laptop and desktop. Will be bumping up to 1920 x 1200 on the desktop if I ever find a monitor I like. :)

At work, I run two monitors at 1600 x 1200, which I forgot to mark in the poll...

1680x1050 on my new laptop, when it arrives...almost went with 1920x1200 but on 15.4" who needs the eye strain?
    3072x1280 (or 3x1024x1280) at work
    2560x1024 (or 2x1280x1024) at home

and I agree 100% with the earlier poster that said to design for 800 pix and make it extendable...websites should be flexible enough to resize to a variety of resolutions. also, if there is any reason people might want to print out the page, you might consider test printing as well (you wouldn't believe how many order confirmation websites I have to print in landscape so the prices won't get cut off)

Got a question for you guys (who use high resolution). Do you like seeing big open empty space on both sides of the layout? Do you like seeing wide open space in the layout? fyi, my website is just a sheet music file archive, not articles with full of text. I find it kinda hard to trace the title of the song to the download link that's all the way to the right (sorta like table of contents with chapters on the left and pages on the right, but wider).

Looks like the majority of us use WXGA while WSXGA+ comes in second. Can anyone help a web design newbie like me?

Since Graphics are fixed and using % can ruin your design, I got a question for you. Here's the condition. If % outcome is <= 1024px, fix width to 1024px without scaling layout (no background will be shown though on both sides). If % outcome is > 1024px, scale layout to x%. I'm guessing I have to use 2 separate templates or no? is php needed?

    Most often:

    1280x800 - on laptop
1024x768 - on desktop. Still get on the Internet often from there.
832x624 - playing Halo on desktop; get more FPS that way
640x400 - playing an old racing game on my old desktop
800x600, 640x480 - on old desktop (1999), never get on the Internet from there because it's dialup. Also 800x600 on old laptop (1997).

If you have 1024x768 material, I'd say go for it. It's been the standard for years now. If you don't have any particular reason for it, though, 800x600 doesn't look bad on higher resolution screens if it's centered. Facebook for instance uses 800 pixels in width and looks fine.

If you're setting up a forum or something similar, a width that automatically adjusts to the user's screen resolution would be ideal. That might be harder to code though.

I only use smaller than 1024x768 resolutions for old gaming, would've left them off if I'd realized your purpose was determining websurfing resolutions.

If you don't like the screen to be 'streched out' like that, choose a 4:3 (aka "non-widescreen") resolution like 1280x1024 and go to the Nvidia desktop control panel and if you search there, you'll find something that controls the scaling of your monitor. Make sure it's not set to strech. Sorry for the vague explanation, I'm not at my computer right now so I'm not sure where to do since I don't memorize the Nvidia control panel. If you're using ATI, however, I'm not sure if they have that option since I'm not familiar with it. I'm sure though ATI cards have a similar feature that adjusts the scaling on your monitor.
