    Here are the specs.

    Sony Vaio

    Model: VGN-FS742/w
    Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (1.73 GHz)
    System Bus Speed: 533
    80 GB Hard Drive
    RAM 512MB

I would like to get a new processor and memory. But the question I have is what processor can I buy thats compatible with my laptop?

    Any help would be appreciated.

I suppose in a way I would agree - but then, if you use it only as a typewriter on XP there is no need for a new machine.

You need to find out what type of socket your Vaio uses and then fins processors with the same type of socket.

    I've got a feeling you'll have to stick with a Pentium M...

The only CPUs you can get are still Pentium Ms, but with higher clock speeds; 2.2GHz is the fastest P-M released, I believe. Even this hard-to-find (and pricey) CPU would not give you a significant performance boost.

    1. There are 2 740's. One is a FC-µBGA, the other is a FC-µPGA. Download PCWizard and tell me all the info about the processor first.
    2. The fastest is a Pentium M 780 at 2.26ghz. It has the same FSB, so that proves to work right out the box, the only thing is that, again, there are 2 socket types. So find out if its a BGA or PGA.

The fastest cpu you can get is the Pentium M780 2.26Ghz processor.
However I think your system is running slow because of a lack or ram and a slow harddrive.
I would upgrade the memory to 1.5-2Gb first before buying a faster processor.
    Your system has a maximum capacity of 2Gb (2 x 1Gb) of Pc4200 ddr2 sodimm memory.
You can buy a 2Gb kit of memory for very cheap these days, so for $22 you can quadruple your memory capacity.

    Here is a great buy:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148086

After you upgrade your memory let us know if the system is running better for you.
You may want to upgrade to a faster harddrive.

Thank you for all the fast responses. I wasn't expecting answers so soon. I got the laptop for when I don't feel like being at my desktop or htpc. I only use it when i'm in the bed sick, at the airport etc. in response to

"boypogi" .. I would get another one but the amount of money i spend buying another one versus the amount of time I would be using it is not feasible to me.

"K-Tron".. You right getting memory and a bigger hard drive may provide a dramatic increase in speed and will be my first choice of action.

To all others. Thank you for your input. When I get home I will download PC wizard and able to tell more as far as socket types..

You know "pricey" means that it's a bargain price (cheap)? Because when i read your post it seems like you're saying it's expensive :p

Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (the authority on Oxford English :D) agrees with pricey = expensive (informal)
This is also how I know the word - anyway, isn't this off topic?

Let's wait for an update on that suggested RAM upgrade, and possible HDD upgrade.
    ____

About the processor - in terms of benchmarks, 0,1GHz may not make a difference, they can make a program run better though if your specs are "borderline" anyway...
