    Hi all,

I just got my Z35F today from MilestonePC.com :D . I ordered and paid for the 7200RPM 60GB Hitachi but they sent a 5400RPM 60GB Western Digital  . Is this a fair trade? Does the Western Digital perform equally well as the Hitachi and are they worth the same price? I am wondering if I should just keep this HDD?

The 7200RPM is significantly better than the 5400RPM, and does cost a bit more. Hitachis also tend to be the fastest drives. I would get them switched.

On a level playing ground a hard drive is a hard drive. Don;t worry about manufacturer to manufacturer. However, this is not a level playing field. A 7200 RPM will be faster than a 5400 RPM. If you paid for it, get your $$ back or have them send you a 7200RPM drive.

I would return that machine for a refund if they don't send you the drive you ordered.

Thanks all. I will call and talk to them. Hopefully I dont have to return this laptop because delivery takes 4-6 days(I'm in Winnipeg) and I'm leaving for university of waterloo soon. I'll let you know it goes. Cheers.

Hi. It seems they want to refund the price difference rather than sending me the HDD I want. My concern is with the noise this HDD is making. I've attached a recording of the sound it is making. It's sort of a clicking sound tht occurs every 4-5 seconds. If this is not a normal sound I will call them back this morning and ask them to send me either the Hitachi I ordered if they have it in stock, or a similar HDD and I will pay the difference and send them back the Western Digital. What do you guys think I should do?

It doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary, perhaps a program is accessing the hard drive every few seconds.
Personally, I wouldn't be satisfied with that . . when they said refund the price difference, are they trying to say that you ordered the 60GB 5400RPM drive instead of the 7200? I would tell them something along the lines of 'if I don't get the drive I ordered in the first place, this system is going back for a refund'.

I've talked with them a few times yesterday. I found that this WD is $30 cheaper than the one I paid for. So what bothers me is that they installed a cheaper HDD without telling me. Had I not looked they would have made an extra $30 from me  . Anyway, they have agreed to exchange the WD for the HDD I want so I'm happy now :) .

On top of what has been said, some of WD's 5400RPM HDDs are 2MB cache (instead of 8MB) that's a further drawback, if you got a 2MB cache.

I am with chaz on getting what you ordered, or at least if you don't want to go thru the whole return laptop and get it from somewhere else, you should request a return of the HDD (for a full refund of its cost of course) and then buy which ever HDD you want from any online store like newegg or zipzoomfly

EDIT: whoops, missed your post just above mine  ... I guess issue solved

And that might end up being cheaper too. But it's all good that it's sorted out. It's always a good idea to check what you got when you do a custom order.
