With the WD Scorpio black 7200RPM line, does anybody know if the different sized drives have the same performance (i.e. 320gb vs. 250gb vs 160gb)? Are the data densities/number of platters the same?

The 320gb has 2 160gb platters and the 160gb has one 160gb platter.

The 250gb either has two platters, with three heads, giving 240Gb of storage, or the heads have limited movement, so the drive can only make use of 250gb of space.

According to reviews, the 320 7200 WD scorpio is fast, but there is a chance of it being pretty noisy compared to others, and that`s very surprising...
    See further though.

FWIW I have one in my Toshiba as my primary drive and it's as quiet as any other drive I've had in it. Fast too............does seem to run a touch warmer than the others though........the original Toshiba 120Gb 5400 ran at about 34c, the Fujitsu 120Gb 7200 ran at about 36c and the WD Black is staying right at 40c.

Even though the 160gb has the same density, the 320GB usually turn out ot be faster. At least that's what I have noticed with other models.

About the noise levels, I don't think it's a problem:
