I recently got a bare WD 250GB laptop HD and scanned it
using HD Tune 2.55. After initially having problem scanning
in an external enclosure, I decided to move to the docking
station and scanned again. The HD initially passed the Quick
Scan then I ran a detailed scan.
The detail scan indicated 1.7% damaged (8 red squares). :(
Is HD Tune reliable in terms of damaged HD? Is this HD toast?

This HD has a date of Jan 2009 manufactured date. Will I be able
to get some sort of replacement from Western Digital even though
I got this from a third party? Any idea and feedback is greatly
    appreciated.

BTW, I use chkdsk on the HD and it indicated no bad sector?!
    Why is this the case?

    Thanks

Was that a full chkdsk? (i.e. both checkboxes checked)?

I use the DOS prompt and type chkdsk for the whole drive. Does that count?

Western Digital will honor warranty if it's bought from a third party.

I just RMAd my 3200BEKT, bought from Newegg.

When you say you use the DOS prompt, you mean within Windows? To do a proper check, you must reboot the computer.

Right click on each drive in My Computer, click properties, tools, then check drive and click both boxes - it should ask for a reboot (or more properly to schedule a reboot). Do this for all the partitions you have on that drive.

When you reboot, go watch a movie (it will take a while).
