I remember hearing that the Vostro 1400 hard drive is pretty slow and low performance, and I found out it was a Toshiba hard drive, so I'm thinking of upgrading to a good hard drive in order to get better performance (boot time is most important so far). I'm not very computer-smart, so I'd like some recommendations as to what hard drives will fit what I need. I want a hard drive that allows quick boot up/shut down and great battery life. Noise doesn't matter, but I'd prefer that it also runs cool (and not hot) but temperature isn't top priority. 5400 and 7200 RPM don't matter to me (whatever is best) and price doesn't either.

    Thanks in advance!

The Vostro 1400 uses standard 9.5mm thick SATA laptop harddrives.
For the fastest boots, your best bet is to upgrade to a 320gb 7200rpm drive or a 500gb 5400rpm drive.
Good sites to check and compare prices are Newegg, Zipzoomfly and Tigerdirect.
I know Zipzoomfly usually offers nice rebate deals on the Hitachi 7K320,
which allows you to buy a 320gb 7200rpm drive for less than $100.

    Here are some good deals:
    500gb 5400rpm seagate

    500gb 5400rpm western digital:

    320gb 7200rpm Hitachi:

    320gb 7200rpm Seagate:

Personally I would go for the Hitachi 7K320 or the seagate 7200.4 series drives because they will have the fastest loading times and they are pretty cheap
I have three 7K320's and they are all fast and quiet.

If you want to wait a little bit, Seagate, Hitachi and WD are going to be relasing 500gb 7200rpm harddrives in a few months. I think within 2 months they will be for sale on the market. They will be a little faster, than the current 320gb 7200rpm drives, but if you dont want to wait the 7K320 is a great buy now.
