    In one word...No.
Sorry !... so far alienware and the DellXPS are the only ones offering a upgradeable GPU. When PCI-x arrives (end of the year/next year) it should allow for upgrading the GPU much more like a desktop.

Given that it is not hardwired to your motherboard, you would have to wait until gateway offers a superior card, and then install it yourself. Like Underpantman says, PCI-Express should resolve this issue with standardized form-factors.

PCI-x is that like a swapable GPU PCI slot thingy.. DAMNIT SOMEONE STOLE MY IDEA!!!!!!!!11

If u want proof go check the Dell forums under the Inspiron 5150 ocerheating or 5150 freezing topic and ull see me recommend the idea of a pci graphics card that can be easily replaced and swapped. If i find out I had the idea firt I'll SUE!!!!!! GRAHHHHHHH *rips clothes of and turns Green* [ :p]

I know pci express is already out for regular mobos and prebuilt desktops, but does anyone know when it might come out on notebooks

Actually my Acer 1710 also has an upgradable video card from what I have seen. It can be removed so I would suppose it is replaceable.

From what I've heard the current replacable video cards for notebooks aren't PCI express, and if I've heard (or understood) correctly they only upgrade the processor not the RAM. So you might have let's say an ATI 9700 /w 128MB RAM that's upgradable. If you swap it out for lets say an x600 it will still only have 128MB RAM

The mb next to the card name are dedicated video RAM, which is on the card itself. Replacing the card would give you all new video RAM, so you can go from 128 to 256 so long as it is offerred for that model. Current notebooks are 4 or 8x AGP. PCI-express may appear in desktop replacement notebooks around october.

The only way to upgrade the RAM is to get a new card. What laptop is this? You would probably see a bigger difference going up from 512 system RAM to 1024, but if you already have a gigabyte by all means upgrade the card.

OK JUST TO CLEAR THINGS UP>>>

NO, not all notebooks are upgradable gpu's. next, i would like 2 point out that people go to www.ati.com and look under mobility and you will see the mobility 9800 (which is on the inspiron xps and 9100) and the MOBILITY x600. AND YES, SOME COMPUTER MANUFACTURERS DO OFFER PCI-EXPRESS ON NOTEBOOKS. I HAVE SEEN IT. i dont remember the exact name but it did have pci-x on it thats 4 sure. also by the end of this year i believe there will be 512 mb notebook and desktop graphics cards, and on that note, check out the ATi r600 core desktop card...possibly end 05 but super advancement in pci x with maybe 1.5 or 2 gb of video ram

OK, you can get the 128 megabyte card, but I have no idea how. Maybe you can find some on eBay.
Ballin: Find out what company that is. Chances are it is the grantsdale chipset which is a whole different animal than the Sonoma chipset. I firmly believe that the sonoma chipset will displace Grantsdale in mainstream and DTR notebooks as it comtains the same features yet houses a faster and more power-efficient CPU.

    GAAAAHHH! [ :(!]
Im new to laptops, and Im completly confused. I had looked around online and discovered that both Nvidia, and ATI made cards for laptops. That they even had a few to choose from. This had led me to believe it would be easy to upgrade. I finaly settled on my dell 5150. I noticed that many of the other Dells have higher end cards, thereby furthering my assumption. I dont understand why it is not possible to upgrade the video cards?! Would it not be possible to perhaps take it to a shop that does work on laptops and have them put it on? I have noticed on ebay others selling out their inspiron 5150 cards. What form of genious have they stumbled upon, and where can I find it. I know aleinware sells a Nvidia go 128mb graphics card if you want to upgrade your alienware laptop. Would it not be possible to add that to most any laptops? strangly confused . . .

Batty13: the simple reason why it doesnt work is that certain laptops support certain types of graphics cards. In short, the shape is different.

z3phrn hit the nail on the head. Some laptop GPU's are square, some rectangular, mine is S-shaped, and some are integrated. They are customized for each individual system. What Nvidia and ATI want to do with PCI-E is standardize the form-factor, so notebook manufacturers would just have to leave a certain space open for theGPU

Alviso is the only chipset compatible with both pentium M's and PCI-express. There are notebooks out now, mostly from boutique manufacturers, that use modified grantsdale chipsets, thus allowing them to use PCI-E.

J-Pac is correct, IGP is integrated, but don't feel too bad. It is still worlds better than the closest intel solution.

Any way thanks a lot. Well i just ran aqua mark 3 and the score it gave was 8800(around). So don't you think thats good. well i don't know. But the score for 3dmark was 442. And that's really low.But I think if i upgrade my ram, i think it will do. well the graphics card in my home is radeon 9600 XT 256MB.

Your aquamark score beat my desktop's 128MB FX 5200, so it's not bad even shared. The 3dmark score is probably suffering from a shortage of RAM, you should expect around 700 after the upgrade.

I have a gateway m675 with a radeon mobility 9600 (uses an AGP slot). I am interested at some point upgrading my graphics card myself. It should be possible right? But I can't find anywhere to buy a mobility card except for ebay and all those cards seem to say they are for the Dell Inspiron laptop. Could they work in a gatway as well or is there another place to order mobility cards? Thank you for any help. -Nathan

You can only upgrade your GPU if gateway comes out with a better one for your exact model.

Ok, so for the gateway m675 they currently have a 'better' GPU the 9700 mobility (I have the 9600). Although I don't think it'd be worth it to change now, just so I understand this if I did at a later time, is the only place I could buy the GPU for my gateway would be directly from Gateway?! Because if this is the case it could be difficult as I don't think they'll sell GPU's separate from the laptops.
Update: Thanks for your reply to this Andrew: unfortunately I don't see any GPU's for gateway on sale at ebay. Maybe gateway would make an exception and sell me one separately.

You could buy it from gateway or ebay, those are pretty much your only choices.
