I would like to put a Turion in my Compaq V2555US (It has a Semp 3000+ in it right now)- What Turion models would be compatible with my notebook? Also, how much faser are the Turion than the Semprons? Thanks in advance!

yeah, that upgrade is possible and has been done before. Check out this thread...

You can use either a ML or a MT series Turion. The MT being better option since they consume less power than the ML series for the same performance.
Typically the Turion should be around 10 - 15% faster than a comparable clocked Sempron. Search through tom's for a comparision between the performance of the Turion and the mobile Sempron.

Wow, only a 10-15% performance increase? I figured that I would get a bit more performance than that, especially in CPU-intensive games.

It should work, but the increased power consumption and extra heat produced will take its toll on the laptop. Tha cooling system is designed to work for 25/35W cpu's. The mobile A64's have a TDP of 62W. Twice the rating at which the cooling system is probably designed for. Also the power supply might have issues if you are charging and using the laptop at the same time.

Not only that, the CPU voltage regulator( PMW) should have capacity to support such a high amperage( almost double).

Cooling solution is noway going to handle that cpu, power supply can not supply such a high current either.

But I was wondering, if the cooling solutions accepts, may be you try Venice/winchester based 754 Athlon64 CPU, which consumes only 30 to 35watts, though, I am not sure about the tolerance of high temp with those CPU. Like for example Turion can take 70C without any problem(max being 95), but I doubt if Venice can handle such high temps.

Well, there are other problems with using a desktop cpu. The IHS will probably have to be removed for the heatsink to sit properly and if it is not done properly it will result in damaging the core.

For the V2000z, it is best to stick with either the Turion MT or ML series or the mobile Semprons(25W).

Yes, I agree. That is the reason I was mentioning if cooler solution accepts.

Only thing I was wondering is, if the heat spreader does not add much thickness, may be we can mount heatsink directly on that.

Hmm, I have a spare S754 A64 3000+ desktop processor, but i don't know what series it is (clawhammer, newcastle, etc)...how can I identify it?

Depends on the heatsink, I guess. One thing though is certain that most common desktop heatsinks wont work with mobile processors, so the reverse might also be true.
Check the markings on the cpu. The OPN number should give fairly good indication of the revision of the chip. Compare it with known revisions here...
