I got an DV9740US laptop weighing in at about 7lbs.

Part of the weight is due to a bluray drive, and dual harddrives.

I'm trying to reduce the weight by removing the bluray drive (don't need one since I have an external drive) and replacing the dual harddrives with a single SSD drive.

This will reduce the weight and heat output. My main question is, if I remove the bluray drive....will there be a "cover" for that slot...and will I void the HP warranty? How easy is it to remove the bluray drive? (I have no problem servicing pcs)

I talked with an HP technician and he said that if I remove the bluray drive, no faceplate will be sent by HP.

So I'm wondering if I can remove the faceplate from the existing bluray drive??

It shouldnt void warranty as only 1 screw is needed to take the drive out. They wont even know if it was taken out.

No theres no cover for that slot as far as i know. The BD drives faceplate wont cover it either because theres nothing to hold the faceplate in

Here is what you can do, go buy a set of small barbells and lift them everyday. Keep increasing the weight and do lots of reps, and then your muscles will grow. Then you will have no problem carrying your laptop.

I mean come on, I am 18 yrs old and I carry a 26lb laptop a 2lb power brick all kinds of accessories, textbooks and my steel lined backpack every day. Its like 50lbs, but I dont mind I get a nice workout everyday.

I hope you realize, that the optical drive bay is only about 300grams and each harddrive is about 150grams. So at most you will be able to cut 1lb off of the weight of your laptop.
What you can do, is you can buy an optical drive blank. It may clash with the aesthetics of the laptop, but its what you are looking for.
Its basically just a plastic shell.

I have one at home, but I cant seem to find one online. I have to figure out what they are called.

if you don't need that blue ray drive,, i can take the faceplate off of it and rig up a way to cover that hole...

just send me the blueray drive,,, and i could use a HDD or 2 also..

    thank you for your support,

Okay, I finally found the optical drive plastic shell which I have.

    Here are some pictures:
    (front-top, looking into the bay)

(drive bay upside down, to show underside, and how it fits into the laptop)

It basically just slides into the optical drive bay and covers the part where the face of the drive used to be.

I hope this is what you are looking for,
try emailing barebone reseller's, I am sure that they have one.
Just send them a picture, and I bet they will send you one for like $5.

anytime man, I hope you can get your hands on one for cheap.

I know it came with my Voodoo laptop.

So basically just contact a Clevo reseller and they should be able to give you the same one.
