Even the smallest USB drive that I can find, the Super Talent Pico C sticks out of the computer by an inch or so. This is enough to cause the drive to bump into something and damage the drive or the USB port.

Are there drive that doesn't stick out at all? I was wondering how people have solved this problem. The only thing I can think of is using a L adapter so that the drive is flush against the body.

Its much easier if you have an SDHC/MS Pro Duo card slot.

You usually can't boot from a SDHC slot.

you want one smaller than the supertalent pico?
    Why?
You wouldnt even be able to get it out of the port if it was any smaller

So you want to boot from the USB drive and keep it in all the time, presumably working from it? You can also get "ExpressCard" "SSD" drives - the quotation marks are because they are really USB flash drives in a different formfactor.

how would you get it out if it was flush?

Unlike card readers, there isn't a spring mechanism to pop them out of a usb port.

    hmm,
have you ever thought about installing an internal one?
USB is the easiest thing to solder to. It is 4 wires for data and the casing is the ground. If you were to take your system apart, you could carefully solder 4 wires from an actual usb port, and run them to a female adaptor from which you could actually install a memory card. If you have a little room in your laptop, you can physically hardware a memory card into your system. It shouldnt be hard to do. Just need to be careful
