I'm just wondering how do I know if my laptop can upgrade to a quad cpu from a dual. I know some laptops have the default option of getting a quad instead of a dual, but what about those that don't have the default option. Also, is it worth the money if I am planning on keeping this laptop for a long time. I've noticed that it is around $200+ more to get a quad cpu than a dual.

    What laptop is it?

If Quad core is not a factory option for the laptop then its not supported.

Even if you plan on keeping the notebook for a long time, if you aren't even maxing out on your current CPU's load then there is no point in upgrading. For $200, you might as well get a SSD and you will notice a lot more of a difference.

Well the laptop was the AW m15x, and I was planning on gaming with that laptop. The only problem was that it didn't have an option for quad core. I believe with gaming, i will be maxing out on my CPU's load.

Oh okay. Thanks for the info. I guess I'll wait for the new m15x to come out and see if its compatible with quad core.

If you're gaming is the higher clock speed more beneficial than the extra cores? Now if you're coding video then gimmie all the cores I can get.

I'm not exactly familiar with clock speed, but my friend told me that quads are "better" because if you add them up, it is more than duals. I'm not sure if this is true.

Core 2 Quads are not compatible with the current revision of the m15x.

Depends on the game. If you are playing GTA IV or Supreme Commander, yes, quads are better. Else, your GPU will be the bottleneck and upgrading your CPU will have no effect. But as Kevin_Jack2.0 commented, you're stuck with dual cores.

I think I've read about someone on these boards putting a Quad core In a Studio XPS 16, and its not a factory optionl.

That might be an exception as opposed to the general rule of thumb...
