    Hey everyone,

I ordered my girlfriend a Dell Inspiron 6000 a couple months ago with only 256MB RAM (her Mom didn't wanna pay for the upgrade to 512). Now I just ordered her an additional stick of 512 MB RAM, (my expense...lol). Will this be compatible with the system? Will she now have 768MB RAM, or will I have to remove the 256 and add the 512 by itself?

    Please let me know,

    Thanks!

    Paul

I hope you bought the correct ram

It should indeed be 768, as there are two slots. However, knowing Dell, it could be 128x2, so max would be 640mb

Yes, I bought the correct RAM, I went through the memory selector with Dell. Max RAM for this system is 2048MB.

It currently has one stick with 256 I believe.

If it only has one stick of 256 then you will be ok this time, but if/when you want to upgrade the RAM again, you will need to ditch the 256 and install a stick of 1GB(or 512), giving you a total of 1.5GB (or 1GB) because the max is 2GB.

Okay, okay......I think I understand.....there may actually by 2x128 installed currently....that means I will only have 512+128, so yeah.....640....just sounds so weird like that.
