I have a Sony Vaio A series 15" VGN-A130 notebook with XGA screen. Is there anyway that i can buy a 15" UXGA panel/screen (dell/IBM) and upgrade the monitor? Assuming i use the frame/backlights etc from the old sony monitor?

Was your machine ever offered with a UXGA display? If not, then I would not be too sure about being able to upgrade.

Upgrading the monitor can be very expensive; you're better off buying a bigger external monitor. You can also do a dual-monitor setup like I do with that; the external monitor as primary, and the laptop's as secondary.
