being a not so computer geek i look for looks affect my sense of judgement in getting a laptop just as much as performance. I was really considering the hpdv6000 but the downside is that it only comes iwth a hard drive that spins at 5400 rpm. so my question is that if i upgrade hard drives will it work fine with the windows software that comes with the computer? ive been told that hp/dell puts some kind of protection so that i wont be able to use aftermarket parts.... can someone help me on this?

Well, the hard drive is where everything is stored. So if you put in a new one, you need to reinstall windows, get the drivers, and all that fun stuff. I'm not an expert, however I would expect it to work normal after that. Just backup all the stuff you want to save, etc. I would imagine that the protection is on the HD, so... yeah... Don't just take it from me though. Like I said, I'm not an expert. :p

No that's not true. The new harddisk will work fine. If you upgrade your harddrive to the 7200RPM, just boot from your manufacturer cd like you normally would and it will install the OS and drivers like it should.

Oh and I (we) are not computer geeks, we just happen to know alot about computers... non offense taken no worry

Rather buy :asus: you won't be dissapointed!

Whoever told you that doesn't have a clue. Just make sure you burn off the recovery discs before start installing your new hard drive.

Also, make sure the HD is compatible with your system: PATA is not compatible with SATA!!
