    Don't do it just yet...
Are you having any issues with the drive that would make you want to change the firmware?

If you are having issues, try to find a HP firmware. You might brick the drive if you put the sony firmware on it.

If the firmware revisions are similar (HP vs Sony)... ie A03-> A05 it might be alright, but if it's something like ZZ1-> A05 (names are made up..) then chances are it will not be compatible.

I haven't bought the drive yet. I am just curious if it is possible to upgrade the firmware.

    I see..

Well, HP firmware will probably not stop you from using it in your Sony laptop.

If it's anything like sony firmware updates, it does a hardware check to determine if it's actually the hardware the update was intended for...

I have a felling that it won't work. Does anyone know where can I buy genuine Sony replacement part for this drive?

Oh, the drive will work, but you probably won't be able to update the firmware, that is until someone comes along and makes a generic firmware for the drive in question. Firmware updates aside, if the drive functioned correctly in whatever it was taken out of and it is the same type (SATA), then the drive should work no problem.

i would not update the hp drive's firmware... u might brick the drive... try using it without the firmware update first and if it doesn't work , look for another one...
