Ok I have 2x512mb ddr2 ram at 987mhz in my laptop and wud like to put a 1gb in and take a 512mb out so i have 1.5gb but the 1gb ddr2 is at 533mhz does it matter that the 512mb is at 987mhz?

Also I would like to install it myself any guides?
I hear its easy just a clip in kinda thing?
    Also is Veritech RAM ok?

1, No, it doesn't matter on the speed of the RAM, however, the 512MB piece will downclock to 533MHz to match the other stick.

2, Installing RAM is very easy. Pretty much just sliding and pushing it into place.

3, Never heard of Veritech, so I can't say anything about them.

First of all there's no such thing as 987Mhz sodimm DDR2 ram :p Perhaps that's your CPU frequency when idle ;) The maximum frequency for DDR2 is currently 667Mhz.

Get CPU-Z to find the frequency of your 512MB sticks. My guess they are 533Mhz.

Like Nibbler said, the 1GB will work just fine. Just make sure its a SODIMM DDR2 ram. Veritech rams are okish, but i prefer OCZ or Corsair or Crucial ram.

Your aspire may be using some of the memory as a turbo cache for the gpu. CPU-Z will tell you how much memory you have installed

no. the 333 mhz will not suddenly have the capability of speeding up to 533 mhz just because you have another 533 mhz ram. you always sync to the slower ram...cuz it just makes more sense.

and what the heck is 987 mhz ram?

They won't even fit in the DIMM slot
    333MHz is DDR gen1 while 533MHz is DDR2 :)
But usually ram clocks down to the slowest one

Veritech? Didn't they make those starfighters that transformed into giant robots for the UN Spacy? The advanced alien technology would account for the 987MHz... ;)

More germane to the topic, wouldn't the OP lose the benefits of dual channel RAM by mixing two different sizes and going to an asymmetrical 1.5GB? Or does the simple addition of 512MB outweigh that? Or is it impossible to "lose" dual-channel-ness? I've heard conflicting explanations of DDR2 RAM and I'm not sure what's right.

I've done my own tests with different RAM configurations and was unable to detect a significant improvement with same sized RAM modules which should be running as dual channel. This was using Intel mobile chipset. Maybe with the right chipset dual channel works.
