A friend of mine has a Toshiba Satellite p-15 s420 and wants to know if the proc. is upgradeable? I'm not 100% sure but I think he has a Pentium 4 in it. He just ordered 2G of RAM to put in it because he said it's running slow. So I recommended upgrading the proc. but wasn't sure if it was possible. Any one know if it is possible and if so how hard or dificult it is?

It is very possible to upgrade his processor. That laptop actually uses desktop pentium processors, so you can upgrade the processor rather easily.

I am pretty sure it is a standard 533Mhz P4 socket 478 chip it uses.
    However double check with CPU-Z.
It will tell you the FSB, the clock speed of the processor and what socket it uses.
Just find a replacement processor which has the same socket and FSB.

Here is a guide on disassembly/cpu replacement:

After some research and based on CPU speed notebook review date CPU release date FSB and assuming K-T's socket is correct (confirm) you have Pentium 4 HT 3.0E SL7E4? The only upgrades I see are

    Pentium 4 HT 3.2E SL7E5
    Pentium 4 HT 3.4E SL7E6

All faster are socket LGA 775 and your notebook model came out before that switch.

Couple of concerns. Switching CPU's for 400Mhz max hardly seems worth it to me, both cost and performance. Less than 12% speed increase? Also the TDP I found for what I think is yours is 89w the other two is listed 89/103w. If these CPU's run TDP 103w your cooling solution will not be able to effectively handle increased heat.

Older slower computers can be upgraded to improve performance and prolong life. Those usually involve RAM and HDD and a clean install of OS.

I would not upgrade CPU just not worth cost risk performance time effort or anything else I can't recall.

    Good luck whatever you choose.
