    Hi,
I want to replace the 2 x 256 Mb RAM & the 40 Gb HDD drive on my Packard Bell ED1. Nowhere can I find out what the upgrade limits are. Does anyone have any information on this?

The harddrive is upgradeable in your system.
Your laptop uses the ATA/PATA/IDE/EIDE harddrives. DOnt worry all of those interfaces mean the same thing.
The fastest drive for that interface is the Samsung Hm160HC drive. It has a single 160gb platter which revolves at 5400rpm. It is a very fast drive. I bought and upgraded my 40gb hitachi with it, and the speed difference is night and day.

Here is my review of the drive:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=264209

You will find pictures, hdtune becnhmarks and comparisons to other 5400rpm and 7200rpm drives for the interface.

The higher data density of the HM160HC enables the drive to outperform all of the other 5400rpm and 7200rpm drives for the interface

As for the memory, I do not know.
Please download cpu-z, and go into the "mainboard" tab, and tell us which chipset your system has.
From their we can tell you what the maximum memory support is.
Also upload images of the memory and SPD tabs, so we can see what memory your system has, and what your upgrade options are
