I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 which a few years old. It has a 160Gb harddisk which I would like to upgrade. Can I just replace it with any SATA 2.5 inch drive or will some be incompatible? I was thinking buying a 1Tb drive, e.g. a SAMSUNG SPINPOINT MT2 HM100UI 2.5, if it will work.

The details of the current HD and the controller are as follows:
    SAMSUNG HM160HI ATA Device
    Intel(R) 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7-M Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller - 27C4

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

Its compatible with the interface but I dont know about it fitting in the laptop itself.

Once you get over 500gb (or is it 350gb) the drives start to get "thicker".I think thats going to be the only issue there.

Yep, any 2.5" 9.5mm SATA drive will work.

The hard drive you listed is 12.5mm and probably wont fit in your laptop.

What OneCool is talking about are 12.5mm drives, but those were really only early large capacity drives. I have a 640GB Samsung drive that is 9.5mm.

Yup, any 2.5" 9mm SATA notebook drive will work.

You can get the Scorpio Black 500 or 750 GB though the 750 GB is pricey. The WD5000BEKT can be had for ~60 bucks. I have the 640GB Scorpio Blue is a nice drive too for ~70.
