Hi everyone, sorry i am new here so i don't know if this has already been answered.

My friend is planning on giving me his HP Pavilion ZE5250 laptop.
    Processor Speed: 2,000 MHz
    Memory (RAM): 512 MB
    Hard Drive Capacity: 40 GB
    Primary Drive: CD-RW/DVD Combo

And i plan on updating the CPU to a 2.8GHz or 3.0GHz or higher, the Memory to 1GB, and the hdd to 60Gb or higher.

I was wondering if it is possible to update those parts or not? I tried searching the net but couldn't find anything. Any help is recommended.

I would update the memory and hard drive first. The Hitachi 7k60 is the best notebook hard drive right now in my opinion, but they are expensive. If all you are doing is surfing, office and burning some discs, you are not going to notice much of a difference in the CPUs.

You should be able to upgrade all those items, but the CPU may be a questionable item. You may be able to just it up a bit (2.2-2.4Ghz), but going to 2.8 or 3.0GHz may push the cooling system too much. This may lead to failure of the cooling unit and overheating/damage of the CPU. You can give it a try, but at your own risk.

Upgrading the processor might not be possible since in most cases the BIOS wont recognise the processor accurately & you may end up with the cpu running(if at all it runs) at a lower clock speed than expected. Upgrading the cooling system is also next to impossible since they are custom built for a specific laptop and are not as easily replaceable as in a desktop system.

Also cpu's change from time to time, newer cores, newer sockets - so the 2GHz processor might not have anything in common with a 2.8 - 3.0GHz even if it is the same processor brand - thus making such a switch impossible.

As zazonz suggested upgrading the hard drive & RAM might be the only option.
