Anyways, I have an external hard drive at home that only has an usb output.

I am thinking of maybe getting an usb to esata cable to increase the bandwidth available and thus the speed but would the usb port on the external enclosure be the bottleneck and thus rendering the connection to the esata port on the laptop side useless?

I think you have the right idea since the USB on the external enclosure will be the bottleneck.

If you have an external enclosure, can you invest in another one?

This is the one that I have and it provides both USB and eSATA for speed and compatibility.

No affiliation w/ Newegg, just a happy customer.
