Hi just looking for a budget computer (Hard to believe these monsters are consider budget laptops in comparison to what was high end three years ago). I came across with these two and they are priced almost the same.

    HP: $499
    Athlon x 2 TK 53
    120 HD 5400 rpm
    Geo Force 6150
    1 GB of Ram

    Toshiba: $549
This is the new look toshiba models
    Turion TL 52
    160 HD 54 rpm
    ATI 1200
    1 GB of Ram

I just need it for everyday use... office, web browsing, email, basic home photo printing, etc

I need to buy it today. I currently have a trhee year old desktop with with a single core Athlon running XP and it has served me well. Which of these two computers will serve me better. It seems as the Toshiba has the bigger hard drive, but I have had my Desktop for 3 years and I have only used 30 GB of the 160 gb Hd.

Their both pretty much the same. You won't notice any difference whatsoever between the two in basic tasks.

I would go for whichever is cheapest and looks the best. In this case, the HP.

I like Toshiba, TL-52 has twice the L2 cache better graphics and larger HDD even if you don't need.

The Athlon is a bit stronger but the Turion as a better battery life I think.

According to AMD's naming policy FAQ, te TK-53 would be better

The T means something but I don't remember
The second letter is the portability, higher is the best (I think)
And the number is the power

For your need the HP will do the job anyway

Being that the difference between the 2 is only $50 I would go with the Toshiba. You will get pretty much the same performance out of those 2 notebooks but the Toshiba has a larger hard drive, so I would go with that (you never know when you will need the extra hard drive space, programs and Operating systems are getting larger these days :) ).

The TL-52 is more mobile(battery efficient) than the TK-53 under AMD's naming scheme the most mobile processors(currently) have an "L" in their designations with increasing mobility as you approach "Z". So TL is more battery efficiently and TK etc.

Thank you so much for all your answers. It seems as if we have a 50/50 reply ratio. I guess that I am not going to go wrong with either one. I will go and see them and see which one looks and feels better. Perhaps the next answers wins.

Toshiba is better, more cache and maybe a tad better graphics.

That is very good Idea and no way to go wrong, but if I can vote twice Toshiba, TL-52 is a more expensive CPU.
