well, the turion is meant to compete with the core duo, not the merom. it's performance, in some initial benchmarks i've seen, are similar to the core duo, if not lower.....so for the performance aspect, i would choose the merom. however, depending on costs, i might go with a turion x2 b/c i would assume, since amd is almost always cheaper, that the turion x2 would be more cost effective. for me at this point, even a pentium m would be an upgrade, so i would go with the one with the best price/performance ratio, which i would assume to be the turion x2. of course if merom comes cheap, i would definitely take it over the turion.

I will reserve the decision when I can buy both, and more "real" benchmarks are available - not the guerilla benchies. If you're interested in a dual core CPU, single threaded benchmarks don't always make sense. You don't select a marathon runner via the 50 yard dash.

    Critical factors for me:
    1. Multi-Threaded performance (data size waaay beyond the CPU cache).
    2. Floating Point performance.
    3. 64-bit performance
    4. Cost, and cost of ownership. i.e.: quality, life, future proof, premature obsolescent. This notebook/laptop should last me until 2010.

    Important factors, packaging:
    1. GPU
    2. Screen (size, bright, speed)
    3. Max Memory (beyond 2GB?)

To be considered, but not on top of the list:
    1. Battery Life
    2. Ergonomics
    3. Styling (i’ll take a fast duck over a slow swan)

I am usually shooting for 36 months (3 years). I believe this is also the purchase cycle for most coporate notebooks. However, this being a bleeding edge dual core, it should last another 6 months (Jan 2010 for a new notebook).

    Kinda like this:

kid: ...dad, I need a notebook for college this fall.
dad: ok, let's go shopping for one, but I want it to last until you graduate (thinking 4 years)
kid: (negotiating...) if I do well, can I get a new one by my senior year? It should better prepare me for graduate school (hit dad just at the spot).

You're right, after a couple years, we all yearn for a new notebook.

Some people cant afford a notebook or a desktop every year. The system im typing on is 4+ yrs old and its gotten some upgrades, but it can handle 2006 technology and its still strong enough to go even further.
