i got this laptop today to repair it its a toshiba m35-s359. the main problem is the screen its almost completly white but displays a couple colored lines half way down the screen. i read up and found one guy with the identical model laptop all the way down to s359 who has the same problem and he says he replaced the flex cable and the screen and the problem is still there. so im curiouse anyone have any ideas whats wrong it works fine on a external monitor but not on the built in display. i thought the flex cable till i read up on it so could it be the motherboard i need to know what the problem is to tell this guy.

    Thanks

tippey, I would try and reseat the cable on the back of the lcd and the other end of the cable which runs into the motherboard. It seems that something is disconnected.
Also another problem, may be your inverter. If your screen is completely white, I would think that the inverter is getting too much power and is causing other problems with the screen.
The only thing you can really do is get a new lcd if reconnecting the cable does not work.

okay, well here is what you can do. Does your laptop have a vga or dvi port on it?
If it does, plug in an external monitor and see if the image appears. If an image does not appear, than your graphics card in your laptop is the problem.
However, if the image does appear, like it should, than the lcd is either broken or their is a connection issue somewhere between the lcd and the motherboard.

I hope an image appears on your external monitor, that makes fixing the problem easier

i probaly should have noted in my first post that i did try an external monitor and it works fine which is why i think it might be the flex cable but then again how would that get damaged its just a wire

tippey, here is what you can do:
Grab a voltmeter, and turn the dial or what not to the ohms setting. Than use the two prongs, red and black, and check the resistance on each wire in teh ribbon cable.
Make sure to remove the ribbon cable from your laptop.
When testing, you will hear a beep from the voltmeter, this is good, that means that the wire is conducting electricity.
If one of the wires does not beep, than you need to replace the cable, or try to fix it.
If none of the wires cause beeps, than either the cable is completely shot, or you have the voltmeter on teh wrong setting.

If the wire is still good, it looks like you have to replace the lcd or live with using an external screen.
