Toshiba today announced two additions to its 5,400 RPM line of 2.5-inch HDDs featuring industry-leading storage capacities.

In the standard 9.5 millimeter-high, two-platter design, the MK7559GSXP HDD incorporates both the industry's highest areal density and capacity at 750GB. Sample shipments will start from April, 2010, Toshiba said.

The MK7559GSXP HDD features an areal density of 839.1M bit/mm2, making it ideal for mobile applications in which capacity is key, including notebook computers and external HDDs.

Toshiba also introduced a new three-platter 12.5-millimeter-high platform with the MK1059GSM and a capacity of 1TB of storage. This capacity point was predominantly supported by larger form factor 3.5-inch HDDs until the introduction of high-end 2.5-inch solutions.

To deliver these storage capabilities, Toshiba has implemented Advanced Sector Format Technology, which uses 4K byte-per-sector formatting and improved error correcting code functions to provide maximum error detection and more efficient use of the storage surface area.

The MK7559GSXP energy consumption efficiency is about 14% less than the previous generation (MK6465GSX, 640GB).

The new products offerings represent the company's first mobile HDD platforms developed with the combined engineering resources from the integration of Fujitsu's HDD business, which Toshiba acquired last fall.

Shame we won't even see it until 3Q '10, but this is a progressive step in the right direction. Shouldn't be long before we see a comparable WD Blue. But WD doesn't like to do these long lead announcements. When they announce a new drive it's normally shipping at the same time.

I love Toshibas. They are middle of the pack for performance but one of if not the best for power consumption.

Would be sweet to replace my Xbox 360 hdd with this monster. xD
Its JTAGed so i can use unofficial hdds.

Also would work great in a SSD combo.

In that case you could hook up a 2TB bad boy.

Interesting hard drive. Looking forward to some benchmarks.

So 375 GB per platter is now possible, that would mean 1125 GB in a 2.5" 12.5 mm hard drive is possible as well.

    Let's hope will see a WD 640GB 7200 rpm soon. Or a 500GB first.

    WD usually outperforms the competition.

Toshibas do sometimes well in power consumption, but rarely in performance.

1.5TB 2.5" 12.5mm hard drive is possible as well. Samasung can fit 3 platters in 9.5mm profile, they probably can fit 4, in 12.5mm case. 4*375=1.5TB

Agree with the last line... the performance is too average... for MK3252GSX...

Hitachi does as well, but I'm only aware of them doing that for their 1st 500GB 5400 RPM Travelstar. I would like to know why Samsung and Hitachi haven't released such a drive. At the very least, WD showed their Passport external drives in 750 GB and 1TB flavors (using 12mm height drives) are popular: why, there's a justifiable opportunity right there. I think Hitachi and Samsung proved there weren't major issues with heat and noise with the 3 platter drives. Unless they're afraid new 3 platter drives would have atrocious access times...

The Samsung 500GB drive with three platters did have slow acces times and high power consumption, but it wasn't that bad that it would stop them from releasing another 3 platter drive, I would expect.
