Is it time to buy a new laptop now? (with a penryn processor and nvidia 9500m/ati hd3650)

I've heard that the new Intel Montevina is due for a release early in Q2 which has improved memory FSB and better graphics accelerators (maybe 9600gt)

Is this true and is it time to buy a laptop know or wait 3 months for a new processor?

you'll have another reason to wait after 3 months from now so if you have extra cash then might as well get it now, that is if you actually need one right now.

If you need, just buy now. No real sense in waiting since the next big thing in computing is always a couple of months away.

Personally I'm waiting until either 1. my laptop breaks somehow or 2. there's something I want to do on a laptop that my current one can't handle.

The problem is that Intel releases a new platform or a new set of cpus and features every 6 months or so so there really isn't a good time. By the time prices come down on the latest new setups they're going to be outdated in a month or two anyway.

Good call. I do upgrade to something new before the old one breaks ;). But a good setup will last you two to three years depending on what you want it to do. If you play games your laptop might need upgrading sooner than when you use it for MS Office. Then it could last you for good while longer.

I'm still using a 3 year old VAIO and it meets my needs perfectly for office work and web media. As long as you can still get all the things done you need to get done on your existing hardware there's no real reason to buy right away. But if you NEED that hardware to begin with then best to get it now.

I know people who still use a Pentium III just because it's all they need. But a new computer is nice every now and then. :) I like it when my system feels fresh the first couple of months.

Heh, yeah. It can be nice knowing you have some of the flashiest hardware on the market. If I had the money to spend, I'd probably have several notebooks just because there's always some really neat gadgets coming out. I'd really like to check out the upcoming Everex Cloudbook for instance but I just don't know if I can bring myself to buy one in comparison to the Eee PC.

And I'd love to have an HDX but I have no actual use for one so I can't bring myself to buy it :p

I suppose it'd be nice to have the latest and greatest but knowing that I'd bought something I didn't need would annoy me. My laptop's 18 months old but is based on the Pentium-M which is 3 year-old tech. It does it's job.
