OK will this still work if I have a OLD HDD out of a old laptop. I need to get some files off of it, it still has the OS on it and everything, just the laptop it was in has been thrown by a psycho girlfriend ahha so now the laptop is un-useable i just want the files off of it.... Will this hardware work for getting files off of it. or will it mess up since it has the OS still on it and everything? how will I go about gett my photos, videos and documents off of it?

As long as the drive interfaces are the same (ie PATA on the HDD and PATA on the dock or SATA/SATA), it should regardless of what files are actually stored on the drive. That is, of course, assuming that your drive is still working after being thrown...

Unless you try to boot from it, it won't try to boot. Even if you try to boot from it, XP doesn't like booting from removable devices and it probably won't work.

I have this dock and it works well. It's a bit bulky since it's not really made to be moved around (power brick is kind of large), but it does offer 2.5"/3.5" SATA compatibility.
