Can thermal paste cause gpu to be undetected / loose?

Having some problems with my gpu crashing or not being detected. I know it's not a heat issue, as it stays under 70c idle and gaming.

Ran some furmark test. Everything seems ok. Then gpu decides to disconnect.

How can I test if the gpu is bad or just loose?

Nope. Sounds like a faulty GPU to me. Time to call in the warranty and get a motherboard replacement.

A heat-related problem would cause the GPU to artifact (drawing "garbage" pixels on the screen) or crash. It would not cause the GPU to disconnect.

You can try cleaning out the fan / heatsink and re-applying thermal paste, since it is a free and relatively quick option that doesn't involve hardware replacement. But I have my doubts that would fix the problem. The "undetected" symptom you describe sounds more like a hardware failure to me.
