About a year ago I was looking for a good replacement for my girlfriends old LG notebook. I love her laptop, since it is small, has a 12" screen, and seems adequately fast enough for internet screwing around, and basic stuff.

Anyways, a year ago I couldn't find anything I wanted, as the screen res of the 10" books were paltry at best. I'm not going to buy something for someone that I wouldn't use myself so I decided to wait.

Anyways with the new 12" netbook offerings from Sammie, Dell, all the players, I've started looking into these more as they are thinner, better battery, lighter, and most importantly, have the same screen res.

All she needs to do on her computer is type stuff, watch youtube, and watch her movies. A built in webcam and a mic that isn't crap is just icing.

Her old LG uses a 1.6GHz Celeron M I believe, my question is would the current 1.6+ N2xx family of Atom chips be AS fast or more importantly, faster?
What about the Zxxx (yet they only support a max of 1 gig of ram correct? due to the chipset)

What I can't seem to find a definite answer to is whether the Atom's have HT.
And with that HT, would that show up as a virtual second core? My knowledge of processors went from P4s directly to C2D's. These Atoms are single core (except for that one which preforms slower right?)...

Celeron-M 1.6 GHz is actually faster than Atom 1.6 Ghz.
    http://laptopcom.blogspot.com/2008/04/first-benchmark-atom-cpu-vs-via-isaiah.html

N270 1.6 GHz performs the same as Z530 1.6 GHz as far as I know. One of the differences is, afaik, that N270 may only be sold with displays up to 1024*600 and 10", where as the Z530 does not have these restrictions. There also seems to be a difference in package size and power consumption.

N270 and Z530 Atoms have hyperthreading.

I own a Samsung NC10 with N270 and 1GB. It plays everything I want to play on it. Youtube, streaming TV and even some xvid 720p all play without any problem. Even though the Atom isn't very fast, it never causes me problems. I do use 'flashblock' while browsing. If I did not, the Atom would cause problems.

No, the Z530 is slower than the N270.

    Here is proof:

Does HT create a virtual core?

I felt one of those Mini 12's the other day in a store over here, WOW.
That thing was so light and thin and sexy...

Yeah I know, but that's not the point. I'm simply trying to find a suitable 2009 REPLACEMENT for her 2004 notebook that is lighter and thinner.
Like I said before she doesn't need some quad core this or SSD to type a paper lol.

I wish it was that easy, but she wants something smaller and thinner, if it looks ugly at all she'd rather keep her old pc even if the ugly one is 100x faster...
