After going through about 10 pages worth of threads about this subject, I still have a doubt about how to avoid an exaggerated 9 Cell Lithium battery wear level. Should I:

    a. Constantly leave it charging?
    b. Charge it to the max, let it run without power till it gets to around 60% and then re-charge it?
    c. Let it discharge and then charge it to the maximum?

    Thank to whoever answers.

To avoid exaggerated wear you don't have to do anything except discharge and fully charge at least once a month. You can leave the battery in all the time. And you can recharge before full discharge as Li-Ion do not suffer from "memory effect".

The partial charge and store in cool place is just a way to minimize an unavoidable wear and loss of ability of Li-Ion battery to hold a charge. It slows it down some but for me not worth the effort.

So basically your telling me I can leave it completely charged for as long as I want, as long as I discharge?

By "discharge", do you mean getting it down to 0 % or just getting it to a very low state?

Yes, will not let you go to 0% so yea very low. Do not store for long period with low charge as it does still discharge when not used and this can cause a problem called "deep discharge" which will fry your battery. Yea keep it fully charged and plugged in except once a month. It should last 2 to 4 years maybe longer?

discharging to zero isn't so good for the battery, as powerpack said... you get the most recharges if you recharge at about 40%. i just leave mine plugged in all the time. if i run on battery, i try to recharge at about 40%. generally i follow these guidelines (see pic):

what would be helpful, is if you could have more control over the battery with vista. i would, for instance, like to keep my battery at about 40% all the time, since i'm practically always on AC... the battery for me is just a backup power supply. but it will always charge to 100% which is not as good for the long-term life.

anyone know how to charge the battery to 40% and then stop, while still having it plugged into the computer with AC?

when i need the battery to be charged 100%, then i could just fully charge it and use it, returing it to its 40% level when i return back to using AC power.

i suppose i could charge it to 40% and take it out. but i'm not that motivated. hehhehe.
