I've just opened up to the idea of getting a Dell Inspiron 1720. I was looking at the base config and noticed an upgrade for the processor with the new penryns, the T8300 and T9300. The question is, would I see a huge difference in performance with the T8300 over the T7250? Will the price of those processors come down in a few weeks? Might we Canadians see a good deal on these new Inspirons? If I do go with this notebook it would essentially double as a desktop replacement, with the 1920x1200 screen, 8600GT and blu-ray drive. I am asking because the penryns are a little bit out of my budget right now, and I would still have to by RAM and eventually upgrade the hard drive with this build.

You will probably feel the difference between a T7250 and a T8300/T9300, though it won't be too big, unless you're doing some heavy, processor-intensive computing.

The price of the chips will DEFINITELY go down, it's just a matter of how quickly. If you can wait a bit, I suggest you should, the machines will be cheaper and there will definitely be some good discounts when the summer or the back-to-school season come around.

Difference depends what you do! Will prices drop? Yes but you are on the beginning of a cycle and if you wait to long then a new cycle will start and you will be back at square one. If out of budget I would in general say don't worry. T7250 is not the strongest CPU on the market but what do you do? if you do what 99% of what the rest of us do it is more than enough. In all honesty the only people who want us to upgrade constantly are those who sell it. Correct? Software companies have no financial benefit creating apps that work with 2% of the computers out there. The T7250 is a very good CPU for someone on a budget. Business drives most apps and a T7250 is 3 years ahead of the curve!

I'll buy a Dell Vostro 1500 soon and i'm in doubt about these 2 processors.

My main goal with this Notebook is play some MMORPG like WoW, Lotro, and some new good game that would come.

What i Wanna know is if with the config below i can play those games with full details:
    - Intel® Core™2 Duo T7250 (2.0 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)
    - 2GB Ram
    - GeForce® 8400M GS de 128MB (this is the better selling for Dell here in Brazil)

I still have a choice to ugrade to this one below paying more U$ 530,00, but is this worth for one who will just play games online?? or the first one is enough?? will have some big or small diferences runnig the games with these configs??
    - Intel® Core™2 Duo T8300 (2.4 GHz, 3 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)
    - 3Gb Ram
    - GeForce® 8400M GS de 128MB

    Thanks for the help ppl!

Don't know if your machine will play those games maxed out, but if there is a bottleneck, it's gonna be the 8400M GS in both cases and not the CPU. In general T7250 to T8300 and 2GB to 3GB isn't worth 530 dollars (unless this isn't USD). You could perform the upgrade yourself for much less if you really want to do it.

It is 530 dollars to upgrade (900 Reais - the current money in brazil- that i converted to dollars to you guys know).

Unfortunately the notebooks around the price i wanna pay (U$ 1.700,00 - 2.000,00) only offer 8400M GS as a better option. To get a better one i have to pay like U$ 3.000,00.
I was thinking what you said, that the Video Drive could be the big problem, and not the CPU or Ram. Thanks for confirm it for me!
I think i will get the first config i posted.

Either way, my point is that there's no point in upgrading the CPU for gaming if your GPU is an 8400M GS. If you were doing more CPU-heavy tasks, it might be, even at 530USD; you'll get a bit more battery life with the T8300 too. In your case the gains are small and probably not worth the while.

530$ is a price of a notebook, that's too much for an upgrade. I would't do it.

The differences will probably lie more in heat and power consumption,as being lower for the T8 and 9 series.
I`d recommend the 9300 for the best compromise in performance/price.

Well gaming wise, if you're comparing the processors I'm 99% sure that the two will give the same level of performance since your video card will be the bottleneck. That being said, unless you really feel like getting a faster processor just in case you ever need to do processor dependent tasks, you should be fine with the T7250. Or, if you're like my dumb friend who just wants a high 3dmark score to show off, the processor would also help, but I urge you not to be so ridiculously stupid.

But, like someone already said, the Penryn processors will give you better performance in terms of heat and power consumption as well(I think 10% or something?), so if you think that's necessary get it, but I'm not so sure it's worth the price or not if you're just going to be gaming.
