There's alot of good laptops that will be going on sale for black friday. Upon reading reviews, alot of them are plagued with stiff mouse buttons. I had a laptop with a mouse button that took considerable pressure from my thumb to register a click and I hated it. I felt like it was a chore to do anything.

Are there any fixes or modifications that can be done to laptops that come with stiff mouse buttons?

Also - why do computer makers even design laptops with stiff mouse buttons? It doesn't make sense. This is the year 2010.

I'm not sure about that either, wondering the same thing!

There are probably hundreds of modifications you can do. I have been thinking about that myself.
Unfortunately you probably dont want to do them on a new laptop. BUT there are some that wouldn't be a problem.

For example, I have some of these buttons laying around: Dell Vostro 1510 Touchpad Buttons 772-007F4-698 - eBay (item 280427968516 end time Nov-17-10 22:39:46 PST)
They are about as stiff as keyboard keys :)

There are quite a few touchpads that have a separate connector for the buttons, such as the one those buttons will made for, and they will fit and work. But there are also a lot that don't.

If you find a laptop with stuff mouse buttons, make sure you know the return policy of where you are buying it from.

This is one of the reasons I like ThinkPads so much. Every one I've seen or used has smooth buttons. I absolutely hate clicky/stiff buttons. I know most people don't even notice this, but it drives me nuts. Most manufacturers use crappy ones. HP used to really good about this, even on their low end machines, but they've joined the crowd. About the best I've seen of late is Dell.

There is a synaptics touchpad setting (Tap Zones) that allows you to allocate certain regions to a right mouse click.
