    Hello!

I have an Toshiba satellite PSP20E-S203, my problem is with the startup process. I get this media check failed. Check cable PXE etc. This is as far as I know a problem often caused by wrong booting options, my booting order is correct, that means that I have disabled LAN as an option.

This doesn´t solve my problem. I starting to believe that it is something with the hardware in the computer. I have tried to boot up from an external harddrive with windows on the USB port. That doesn´t work either. First of all I get this message saying that windows did not start properly last time (from the external drive) After that I can see the windows logotype flashing by, after 1 second I see an bluescreen. Cant read it because its flashing by pretty fast. Anyhow, the computer restart itself and repeat that message from the external drive.

I have tried to remove the battery and put it back again, also I have tried to disconnect the harddrive and put it back again with no results.

I need some suggetions or clues of what this problem may be caused from.

    Many thanks
    Robin H.

Without connecting any external HDD, you get the media check msg ?

Check the BIOS if the HDD (internal) is shown in INFO and Boot Order.

That´s correct. My internal HDD is shown as None in the BIOS, that means that the computer doenst recognize the HDD.

So I connected the external drive through the USB port, the external drive is recognized but dont want to start up properly at all through my Toshiba. The same external drive is working properly on my computer to boot from.

Can this be caused by the IDE controller, can it be damaged or broken?
The external drive should not be recognized if that was the case?

I believe the HDD is damaged/dead.

Did you drop the notebook or bumped it ? Did you notice any sort of deterioation in performance prior to the failure ?

Any loud clicks or crrrrs ? Which HDD is it ?

Okey, so my first action should be to try another HDD?
Its my internal HDD that is not recognized in the BIOS.

It does not explain why I get an bluscreen on my external drive that is working perfectly on my other computer, actually Im writing from it right now :p

This notebook has not as far as I know been dropped or something like that, this problem has just occured. Sometimes the computer tries to read from the HDD but nothing happends.

OK, try another HDD. Buy a new one or borrow a similar IDE (?) HDD from someone.

Do not use or try to use the broken HDD, because that can cause more damage to it and make data recovery difficult.

The external USB (?) HDD has nothing to do with the IDE Controller.

OP, I believe the problem is because you've got the LAN disabled and also have it as a Boot device in the Boot Order option of the BIOS. Make sure the LAN is after the HDD in the Boot Options, save the settings and try again.

Nah makaveli, Andy's got it on this one IMO... dead hard drive, otherwise the BIOS would be showing his drive. It's defaulting to boot from LAN because it can't find any boot devices. My suggestion is to try booting from a CD (windows CD, linux live CD, UBCD, etc). If that works, it's a bad hard drive.

One more thing I didnt mention, when I insert windows cd the computer tries to read it but doesnt boot. Can it be that my cd/dwd reader is broken aswell or can it be that it get disturbed by this failing message?

try opening the optical drive tray, and use a q-tip with a small amount of rubbing alcohol on it to clean the lens.
Than try using the cd again. If the cd reads than that will bring you a little more fruition. If the drive still does not read, than its time for your system to go in for repairs or replacement

Do you have the Optical Disc Drive as #1 in the Boot Order in the BIOS ?
