I have a Sony VAIO VGN-SZ340P3, it has 512MB DDR2-533. I want to upgrade it with 2 x 1GB DDR2-667, but from what I keep reading elsewhere, the BIOS will simply downclock it to 533MHz; is there any way to get around this so that it operates at 667MHz? Since the CPU's FSB is 667MHz, this should result in an improvement in performance, right?

If it is possible to work around this RAM clock barrier, what kind of impact would it have on battery life?

RAM running at 533 MHz should be fine. So long as it is in dual channel mode, then the processor will be getting enough data flow, and there will be no performance loss. Bear in mind, that you don't need to purchase RAM which is paired in a dual channel kit, as two normal 1 GB modules can run in dual channel. If they cannot run in symmetrical dual channel, then they will run in asymmetrical dual channel, which again, increases bandwidth.
