My FZ18L has an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz processor I have noticed I can get some pretty good deals on higher spec Core 2 CPUs.

What is the fastest device I could fit into the FZ18L motherboard? Could I put the E7500 Core Duo 2.93GHz in?

Also I need to replace the battery - is it safe to buy a non genuine sony battery as these seem to be about a quarter of the price of sony parts.

The E7500 is a desktop CPU so that will not work. You will need a T series CPU with 800 mhz.

The fasted CPU that would work is the T9500 I think but the T8300 might be better value for money.

Wave is right. You can not put a desktop CPU in your laptop. For the battery, I had a topic about that here on NBR, and it seems like most user agree with it is O.K. And yes, they're way cheaper then orginal...

Would these CPUs be ok without any cooling or PSU upgrades?

The standard unit does get quite hot how could I keep it cooler?

Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card on this laptop?

Your current CPU is the T7100 I think. It has the same max TDP of 35 watt than the T9500 so this should be ok. If you take good care applying the thermal paste on the CPU and clean the fan then it might get less hot but the difference will not be huge.

You cant upgrade the graphics card sorry. Mostly CPU upgrades or not worth it unless you really like your notebook and want to get the max use out of it. I would look at getting a new laptop.

A refurbished notebook of the newest generation will perform much better then an upgraded model. If you manage to sell your old notebook it might be cheaper even.
old notebook selling price + cost of new cpu and other upgrades > new laptop cost

Yes you need a 800 FSB Core 2 Duo. You could look at a T7500/T7600 or T8300. T8300 just has 1 MB less cache than T7x00 series processors.

Also certain laptops but mostly All-In-Ones use mini-ITX motherboards but use desktop processors. iMac for the Core 2 Duo's can be upgraded as it is LGA775.
