Ok so today i had an odd problem with my laptop.

Last night it was working fine and when i was done i put it to sleep mode, and this morning when i tried to turn it on, the power light came on and the fan was spinning, except it was just a black screen and no hard drive activity was shown.
Only the power light was on and the touchpad light and the media key lights weren't on. So i turned it off and tried doing a hard restart and the same thing happened.
Black screen, HD wasn't spinning. Now the weird thing is that i had to tap the bottom and the sides of my laptop and it finally turned on normally. HDtune shows my hard drive as normal (and my hard drive is new, only 1.5 months old) so i don't think it is the hard drive.

    Any ideas why this happened?

Maybe the ribbon-cables connecting your hard drive are loose and they don't make proper contact...maybe you didn't secure them well enough when you replaced your hard drive and came undone later...That would explain the tapping. When they move a little they make contact again...

The Toshiba A300 does not have ribbon cables.

However, it still sounds plausible. I'd just open up the bays and check if the caddies are screwed on to the chassis properly.

Try turning it off. Then unplug it and the out the battery for 45 seconds. Sometimes works :)
