Hey guys, I'm in the market for a 7200rpm HD for my lappy.

    I'm thinking something 160GB+

    Cheaper is better, any suggestions/recommendations?

I picked up the Hitachi travelstar 200gb... it's unbelievable. No noticeable drop in battery while on power saver, and it's actually more quiet than the 160gb seagate that came with my my Vostro.

Everything is much snappier.. no more constant hard disk thrashing.

    ...Price?

..that's odd, I don't ever hear my hard drive...but I know it could be peppier. Maybe it is thrashing and I'm too ignorant to tell?

your environment might be too loud for you to hear it, or you just have a good silent drive or something else.
I do like the 7k200 series hitachi. I only have an 80GB but have no need for larger. It's much snappier than the 160GB Seagate 5400.3 it replaced. I'll have trouble going back to 5400rpm now, I'm not much of a pack rat, all my stuff gets saved onto external devices when I get the chance, 80GB is plenty for me. That, and the drive came new for $47 so I can't complain.

    An interesting find:

I bought a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini External Hard drive off of an alternate seller on Amazon last Wednesday from an alternate seller. It totalled under $90 shipped.

Using a credit card, I slipped off the locking tabs with a credit on the case and found a Momentus 7200.2 SATA 3.0Gb/s 160-GB Laptop Hard Drive.

    Newegg wanted $159 plus shipping.

I guess I might have voided the warranty by opening the external drive case. But since there are no visible pry marks, I guess I can keep the case and reinstall the drive, if I needed to send it in for the Five Year Warranty repair, if it needed to be done.

    Look for STM901603OTA3EI-RK

I went ti Best Buy, today, and that is the exact same number on the package as the one on mine.

Earlier versions had a 5400 rpm drive.

Zipzoomfly has the 7K200 series for ab out $170. I have two of them in Raid 0, and no problems, they run cool and fast, pretty quiet, and they use less power so battery life is maximized.

Yeah, I'm too much of a cheapskate right not to drop $170 on much of anything, but if you want to part from one of your beauties, let me know I've got about $7.50 in my wallet =D

    Go to the Seagate Registration website;

The STM901603OTA3EI-RK is identified as a 7200 rpm drive. Last week it was on sale for $99.99 at Staples.
