I noticed some sites give you the option of having a 2nd battery when you configure a notebook.

Is this just a spare, or is it possible to put it in the machine to double the battery life?

that depends on what machine it is. some laptops are hotswappable. meaning, you could take out the dvdrom and put in the spare battery WHILE the computer is still running on the main battery. of course, this means the 2 batteries aren't interchangeable because of the size/shape difference.

u'll really need to look on the manufacturer's website for this info if the store's site is not clear about it.

Its 95% of the time or lets say 99% to my knowledge, one battery goes out another goes in.

It depends on the computer, sometimes you have the option of pulling out a drive and slapping in a battery but most of the time you have to shut down and put in a new battery. For the hotswapable one its usually not designated as a second battery but as part of the drive.
