    Hi all,

Look here on the Seagate forums.

I have the 500GB XT (SD23) for less than a month and it's beeping and stuttering like hell.

Do you have this problems as well ?

Old link, old story. Look it up on the Momentus XT thread

I have been running three of these in two laptops for a few months now. Two of them are in RAID, one of them is the single system drive. No problems with any of them.

doen't it sound like another compability issue which means even 99% of XT users have no problem, it doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist ?

I really don't think it's a compatibility issue, I tried the drive in more than one laptop and desktop, the result was the same.

I think that maybe lots of "lemons" hanging around the market.

Wow, kind of harsh. I searched "momentus xt" and all that turned up were 8 reviews, and almost all of them were on notebooks with the xt, no sign of a thread about issues. Perhaps a better way to help would have been to provide the link. Just saying.

Much better form in answers, if I do say so. Do any of you know why the search didn't show this?

And Pirx, I certainly wasn't trying to be rude, I have seen you give out a lot of good info, so maybe I just read it wrong. I have used the search before with good results, but several times all I get back is the reviews, when I know I have been on certain topics. It can be frustrating to search and there seemingly is nothing, but hours later you stumble upon exactly what you need. I don't think I have ever not been able to eventually find what I need, but the search would be so much faster.

Don't worry about it; I can dish it out, and I can take it, too... ;)

As far as the search function on these types of forums is concerned, I agree that it sucks dead bunnies through a straw. To be honest, I have hardly ever been successful finding anything as soon as the search was even the tiniest bit more demanding.

What I found with my one bad drive is that the platters seemed to vibrate so badly the drive had trouble trying to keep the RPMs up. If the RPM's feel below an internal tolerance then the drive acted like it had to spin back up. This would happen with either the platters actually stopping and spinning back up or the drive would pause until it felt it was running in tollerance. I am not sure why it would vary in its reactions othe rthan it may be how far it felt it was out of tollerance as to what its reaction was.

You could have a drive that just has that slight slow down in platter speed and the drive is reacting to get the speed back up and the heads where it should be. I could be totally wrong here but it would be my first suspect.

I do know with the 7200.4 if the port was under powered it would beep like crazy and of course not work. So this is another indication for if the mechanical system is drwaing too much power trying to get to the 7200 RPM it would cause your issues as well.

In all I would RMA or warrenty replace that drive ASAP..................
