The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. I'd suggest doing a search on the matter first, there is a lot of material already written about it.

But the main topic is that SSD is much faster and energy conserving, but has a limited lifeline due to its limit of writes.

    In a nutshell:

    NAND is quieter
    NAND is cooler
NAND won't be damaged by rough handling (within reason)
NAND has, by current standards, instantaneous access speeds

Things I'm not sold on yet:

NAND transfer rates... they're supposed to be comparable, but I don't buy it until I see Storage Review or Tech Report tests of a shipping product.
NAND data integrity... read/write cycles are supposed to be much improved in recent generations, but you will still lose bits with heavy use. Time will tell.
NAND scalability... I'm sure it's going to scale well, I'm just not sure it's going to get a chance with MRAM and PRAM on the horizon.

But yeah, do some searches, there's a lot of debate out there. Personally, I'm excited at the prospect of a decently priced 32GB drive for an ultraportable.

Oh yeah, and better power efficiency.
    I knew I was missing something :)

Dont forget cost of NAND is >> cost of normal HD.

For now, anyway. I'm sure the prices will come down very quickly once they start selling, probably not to match mechanical hard disks for several years though. Of course, there are likely to be shortages as well...
