    Greetings folk's

I was giving my father's laptop after he sadly passed away recently, however the core i3-350m seems to be hitting 60c constantly with the fan going an its been cleared of dust.

tried upgrading the bios which hasn't made much of a difference, i am curious to what CPU's are supported by this laptop i know its a first gen core cpu's.

i'm also told that the TPD can't go above 35w, and also what ram would this need? as its stuck with 3gb of ram.

any help would be much appreciated. :3

    A repaste might be helpful.

In there any indication of unusual CPU load?

The RAM should be DDR3 800/1066, up to 256MB*8 (2GB) per DIMM.

If your R730 has discrete graphics (Nvidia or ATi/AMD), you can even use quad core Nehalem i7, but of course more heat.
Otherwise, i7-6x0M are the maximum, a more sensible option is the i5-5x0M series.

Listen to this guy, check whether there are a lot of unneeded background processes running, especially malwares.
Considering a repaste and dusting didn't help, I'd take a look on background processes immediately.

Sorry but gotta correct that, it can take almost any DDR3 RAM sticks up to 4GB, with two memory slots that makes the maximum RAM at 8GB.
The RAM speed is capped at 1066MHz (even if you use PC3-12800 sticks), but using faster RAM sticks has an advantage: They work at lower speed with lower latency.

Its not got an amd or nvidia chip sadly, which core i5 would you recommend to upgrade to?

i5-560M would be the sweet spot. i5-580M is just too expensive.

Is the CPU in this notebook socketed? It is available as both PGA (socketed) and BGA (soldered).

    This review
is informative about what performance you can expect and indicates that the normal temperatures are quite low. I would support the suggestion for a repaste. Also check the CPU activity. HWiNFO's CPU speed indicator is very helpful for this - is the speed varying? if not check that the performance profile is on Power on Demand (or similar name) and not Maximum Performance (which keeps the CPU running at full speed). Then check in Task Manager if something is fully loading the CPU. A maximum 10% CPU load (ideally less than 5%) is appropriate when the computer is on idle.

Sorry to hear about your father. :(

What O/S are you running? What storage subsystem (SSD or HDD)?

    See:
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=743&cmp[]=780

Upgrading the CPU (if it is even possible...) is not a worthwhile endeavor, imo. Sure, ~38% faster sounds like a great upgrade. But the absolute performance is still below par for late 2016...

If Windows 10 is installed on an SSD, I would recommend a clean O/S install via USB and then manually updating the drivers and installing the programs as needed. If this is on an HDD? I wouldn't do anything to this system at all.

The Arrandale platform was great almost 7 years ago. It has been greatly superseded since.

Even with Windows 10, 8GB of RAM and an 1TB SSD ( Asus U30Jc), Arrandale lacks support for the latest tech we take for granted today (like greater than 8GB RAM options, USB 3.1, an SSD optimized/compatible platform and low heat/power and long battery life usage).

I understand the sentimental value of this notebook to you. But use it as long as you can 'as-is'.

Any upgrades (in $$$ and time) to this very old platform are better spent on newer platforms instead.

    Take care.
