Magician 4.2 features a number of improvements over version 4.1:
    - RAPID(Real Time Acceleration Processing of I/O data) Mode
    - Dynamic Over Provisioning
Recommended : 10 % of available space for OP by default

Custom : User can provide the percentage of available space for OP
    - Disk Authenticity :This feature has been removed from the main menu of Home screen and
    integrated with Disk Drive view.
    - OS Optimization :After configuring the Virtual memory in the OS Optimization
(Reliability/Endurance/Capacity), if the Virtual memory is configured
successfully then user will be prompted to do a system restart by magician application.
    - DPI(Display Interface) scaling limited to maximum 115% incase user changes the DPI more than 100%. With this also some of system
component like menu, message box and scroll bar are still scalable based on user selection

Is your firewall blocking internet traffic from magician? Hitting "Magician Info" might result in a query to check for updates with the server.

Quick question about the software. If you have not purchased the 'SSD With Upgrade Kit', but have simply purchased a Samsung SSD alone; can you use their Disk Cloning software feature from within Magician to clone an SSD onto your Samsung SSD?

If Samsung doesn't designate the software as beta why should I put BETA in my information.

If you don't want to use it,don't!

    I could care less.

Next time I get a notebook, I`ll get the 750GB EVO I think. And do some over provisioning on maybe 100-150GB to make it perform the best. And still have 600-650GB for almost the same price as a 512GB PRO :)

samsung magician (4.1) does not have a built in disk cloning tool. however, samsung has its own cloning software called the samsung data migration tool which can be downloaded from their website.

Magician 4.x do not have any built in cloning softwares. If you're talking about Magician 3.x, it simply is just a shortcut that points to Norton ghost which is completely a crap cloning software.

The current Samsung/Clonix Data Migration on www.samsung.com.samsungssd is the way to go. It supports 470, 830, 840, 840 pro and 840 evo.

It's not because it is beta, it's just marketing. The only drive it impacts at the moment is the new EVO drive so it is being packaged with that. There is supposed to be an update sometime soon to add rapid on the 840 pro and when that happens I am sure they will post it up again. I am certain they took it down because they decided against adding the 840 pro at the moment with all the good press the evo drive is getting. They probably want to get people to buy new drives before they let them just update their old drives. I mean i have an 840 pro and I am half tempted to grab an evo to test it out (still keeping my 840 pro though) but if I can just update the pro then ehh no need for me to buy a new drive.

True words. I think I will go with Samsung EVO 750GB or 1TB next time I buy a notebook instead of 512GB PRO. Always nice to have more space too.

Not only is it just as fast (sometimes faster too) but if they do make the RAPID exclusive to EVO, there is no doubt EVO is the one for me :)

Wanted to chime in, just got my evo delivered and they do not come with magician 4.2 it comes with 4.1. The file linked here DOES allow u to enable rapid

also found 2 alternatives that get better speeds than rapid mode PrimoCache Overview Disk Cache, Hybrid Disk Cache and RamDisk which get 6gb/9gb readwrites each. while rapid only gets 1GB

    Run crystaldiskmark for us :)

Also, remember that RAPID must learn first, so it takes a while for it to kick in.

Samsung's RAPID writes all 1GB of cache to the SSD each time it shutdowns so next boot it will be in use instantly. Ask yourself, if youк computer needs to read something from your SSD drive first time after boot, then how some third party caching solution which doesn't backup cached data before shutdown can give you faster speed? It will give it only after each file will be used at least once.

It will show 9GB per second speeds :) But it means only that they optimised it to the benchmark and show fake speeds.
Although, I may be wrong, but someone can try to use PrimoCache on HDD and launch some heavy program. I bet it will be as slow launched as usual. Then reboot and try again. My bet is that it will be the same slow)

Remember, OI am not trying to sell you this software ;) Windows 8 does not defragment SSDs. Windows 7 is fine in all other like aligning.

1 function which is very good to have is overprovision. You may use or may not. Same as to RAPID. Same as to firmware upgrade.
And the main thing that some settings are not 100% needed. You may decide what tweaks/optimisation to use and what not.

Windows is such a Windows 8 :D Article says it is a bug that it defragments it. Anther reason to handle SSDs yourself than let it to OS do it for you. I personally disable all Windows 7 Defrag. When I want, I use 3rd party software for usual files and special bat file for more important OS' parts.

It's worth noting that RAPID is only useful for the 840 EVO line for now.

I know that dude, just trying to get down to it ;)

I think that's handled by the controller itself, and doesn't need any additional software, am I wrong ?

Right, but it would only require a launch every once in awhile to check for a newer firmware !

What do you mean by those ? Sorry I didn't understand.

    Oy, who'd have thought!
I actually checked my logs and it says muy SSD last been defragmented in June.. And there's no record of it being trimmed during these 2+ months also. Curiously the automatic optimization was switched off -- so it looks like Win8 must have switched it off on it's own somewhere around June (bugfix update?) cause I haven't been touching these settings. That figures, as there have been noticeable slowdown, especially while moving around larger files!

My dialogue box is quite different than the one from the article:

    optimise_drives.png

It says 0 days since last run for C:\ cause I launched "Optimize" manually, just wanted to check out of it would only be trimming, or if it's indeed defragmenting it. And it didn't defragment at this time, just trimming..

Not sure now whether to switch the auto-optimization on and check back if it gets naughty with defragmentation, or indeed to write my own script.. I'd rather prefer OS dealing with this -- or the drivers.

Yeah, found out this by now, I'm on 830.. Not sure if it would benefit me, just read 2 somewhat conflicting articles on what it really does, and since it's not working for me anyway, not willing to waste time investigating any further.

That's because, you have switched off Automatic "Optimize Drives", you need to leave it on for the OS to carry out "Trim".

Multiquote is not very good thing on forum.
After format you get 7% hied. Like only 120GB of 128GB.
But you can set more size which is called OVERprovisioning for longer life, better speed, consistency, latency etc.
Bat file for defragging defrags MFT for example. Read more here
When you launch Magician software you will see there a table with buttons Enable/Disable or Activate/Deactivate on different settings. In one simple button click.

Just install it, look and decide if you want uninstall. Windows 7 is NOT Windows XP and does not degrade so please, you can find time to install/uninstall or google for options of Magician 4.2 faster than waiting for answer here.

It's already installed, as I said, I'm still testing RAPID to decide whether or not I'll keep it.
Overprovisioning size setting can be set when partitioning, just leave empty space and the controller will use that.
I saw the optimizations options, but most of them seemed almost useless (unless you messed with the default OS setting) or unstable.
Like that virtual memory suggestion to limit it to 2GB. Many programs will run out of mem if you do so.
Thanks for the link, will check it out later =)

These SSDs are made with the manufacturers' own firmware and are different from the retail versions of Samsung, unfortunately these drives are not recognised by Magician utility, I have a PM830 which was made for Dell laptops and no go with Magician.
