I know the SSD thread is massive, but if you search through it, you could find most of the issues that plague various SSDs and how to resolve them.

Actually I just recommend Musuta to start his own thread for his own specific problem.

The SSD thread has so many discussions running through each other I find it hard to answer people there.

Perhaps, at least for a couple of months, SSD posts should rate their own parent topic.

Here's some general ideas to improve performance of SSDs:

    1. make sure you did a clean install, from the ground up (removing all partitions before you start by choosing custom setup)
    2. install Intel Rapid Storage driver
    3. try enabling write caching (Device manager → Disk → Double-click on you disk → Strategy tab → check BOTH)
    4. check that TRIM is enabled (Fsutil command)
    5. Disable pagefile...
    6. Disable hibernation...
    7. Disable indexing service...
    8. Disable prefetch...
    9. Disable superfetch...
    10. If none of these tweaks worked check partition alignment

What is partition alignment, and is it needed on the new SandForce drives?

If you did a clean install with Windows 7 on a new drive, the partition alignment will be fine.

Here's the updated list of SSD performance tips:

    1. Make sure you did a clean install, from the ground up (removing all partitions before you start by choosing custom setup)

    2. Enable AHCI in BIOS.

    3. Install the latest Intel Rapid Storage driver (Download Intel® RST Driver Files for F6 Install from Intel.com. Go to Device Manager, select under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" the "Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller". Then right click, update driver software. Browse, browse. Now browse to where you saved the Intel Rapid Storage driver. Select the folder and click OK. Reboot required.)

    4. Enable write caching (Device manager → Disk → Double-click on you disk → Strategy tab → check BOTH)

    5. Check that TRIM is enabled (Fsutil command)

    6. Disable scheduled defragmentation

    7. Disable pagefile

    8. Disable hibernation

    9. Disable indexing service

    10. Disable prefetch

    11. Disable superfetch

    12. Check partition alignment (shouldn't be necessary if you did a clean install with Windows 7)

Les, if anything should be added let me know.

Your 4K random write performance looks very low. I'm not used to Samsung drives though.

    Have you checked partition alignment?

From what I've read - a secure erase is the recommended way to 'restore' like-new performance to an SSD and is also recommended before re-installing a Windows installation.

Essentially, it is the 'last ditch effort' in determining if the drive is at fault or if it's something else that is affecting the SSD's performance on a specific installation.

I never get my SSDs secure erased because simply there is no official program or soft for it .. all are just unofficial or old software designed for HDDs ONLY not SSDs .. I downloaded HDD erase ages ago and it simply doesn't work because it is not for it it is not supported

I have Vertex 2 and a clean windows 7(not cloned) installed today. Here is the benchmark. Is this normal? I think some review has better Read/write speed.

Hi Phil, I think I have done all of them.

    Necessary

    1. Enable AHCI in BIOS.
    Yes

    2. Do a clean install, from the ground up. Remove all partitions before you start by choosing custom setup.
I created one 40G(for windows) and one 20G(not formatted yet, for linux use later) partition

    3. Check partition alignment (not necessary if you did a clean install with Windows 7).

    4. If you have an Intel chipset, install the latest Intel Rapid Storage driver
My controller is Intel 5 Series 6 port SATA AHCI. I install the full version of Rapid Storage, which comes with a control center thing.

    5. Enable write caching (Device manager → Disk → Double-click on you disk → Strategy tab → check BOTH)
    Yes

    6. Check that TRIM is enabled (Fsutil command)
    Yes The value is 0.

    7. Disable scheduled defragmentation (control panel → type: defrag in search → turn off)
    Yes

    8. Set Windows Power Profile to High Performance.
    Yes

    Optional *

    9. Disable pagefile (control panel → type: pagefile in search box and follow instructions)
    Yes

    10. Disable hibernation (press start and paste " powercfg /hibernate off " in the search box, press enter)
    Yes

    11. Disable indexing service.
    Yes

    12. Disable prefetch.
    Yes

    13. Disable superfetch.
    Yes

    14. Disable System Restore.
    Yes

    15. 4K Cluster size
    Yes

It says the lastest driver has already been installed. The file is iaStor.sys Date 3/3/2010

    Toshiba X505-Q885.
I attached the driver to secondary SATA and has a 7200 drive in first SATA connector. Does that make any difference? Also does 64 bit OS improve disk speed?, coz crystal diskmark has a 64 version. Thanks

Try connecting it to the first SATA connector.

    x64 shouldn't matter.

Mushkin finally made available to users that need it a new Firmware. I am hoping it unofficially slows down the "Lifetime Write Throttling" from enabling on the Callisto Dx, time will tell. It is the update for the SF2's that fixes the SMART error on some systems.......

    TANWare,

I hope Patriot will release a simliar firmware for the same issue. (Crosses fingers).

Does anyone know where to download the OCZ Toolbox from? It supposedly works with the Inferno I have for not only secure erase, but also as a manual TRIM tool too.

    Thanks.

    Musuta,

Don't 'ask' it to update the driver. Tell it.

    Right click on Computer,
    Select Manage,
    Select Device Manager,
    Select:
    IDE/ATA Atapi Controllers,
right click on the AHCI controller,
    Update Drivers,
Browse My computer for driver software,
Let me pick from a list
    Have disk,
and finally, browse to the folder you have unzipped the drivers to.

    Good luck.

I said I can tell he installed the driver correctly. The reason I asked for a screenshot: On a dutch forum there was someone saying he had already installed the Intel RST driver. I asked him to post a screenshot, this was what he posted.
